Warning signs
- The caller sounds familiar but the story feels sudden or extreme.
- They tell you not to call anyone else.
- They ask for gift cards, crypto, wire transfer, or payment apps.
- They create panic before you can think clearly.
Safer next steps
- Hang up and call the person back using a known number.
- Use a family code word or private verification question.
- Contact another trusted family member.
- Do not send money during the first call.
